Ian Sephton - Marine Corps Veteran and Serial Entrepreneur

February 22, 2017
Former Marine -Ian Sephton, a nationally recognized "serial entrepreneur" and decorated former Marine can offer other vets guidance on how to adjust to civilian society. How to find success in business and beyond when taking on new careers after serving. Ian's taken life's various paths to success - through education and into business - and can show others how to follow the lead by suggesting what worked for him.

Who is Ian Sephton? That is a question that elicits many responses - all of them tracing back to the fact that Ian is a creative, motivated individual who is respected for the many things he has accomplished in both his personal and professional life.

Originally from Southern California, Ian grew into an athletic young man with a bright future as a college football player. However, following a path that other men in his family had also taken, Ian set out to be a Marine and in 1996, he joined the United States Marine Corps (USMC). While in the USMC he became a Vehicle Commander and earned various awards, among them the Navy Achievement Medal. By the time Ian enrolled in Chaffey College in 2000, he was already a decorated marine and a well-respected young man on the path to success.

After playing football at Chaffey College, Ian transferred to California Lutheran University and graduated in 2005. As a Senior Manager at DHL, Ian was able to transform various struggling regions of the company into successes and was offered a leadership role within the company. Although he was grateful and humbled by the offer, he turned it down to devote his time to furthering his education by taking a role at USC where he managed all non-academic units and oversaw over 1400 employees. In 2010, he graduated USC with his MBA. Realizing he could take what he had learned through his experiences in capital projects, leadership training, real estate, and business and create a lucrative new company, Ian began his own business, Hangar202.

Founded on the belief that they can add value to early stage companies, Hangar 202 grew into a renowned investment group. Reflective of his time spent in various team-focused activities, in both football and the Marine Corps, Ian incorporated the vision of a team into Hangar 202. This team of problem-solvers, mentors, and connectors has had numerous successes in the industry, among them Cure Pharmaceuticals (publicly traded), Syncromatics, and Otto’s Tacos. Ian is also a proud and active partner of the Branstetter Group (a creative hospitality design and management firm that he started with the Co-Founder of Hillstone Restaurant Group) and Syncromatics (a mobility tech company), both of which are nationally recognized for their successes in their respective industries.

Beyond being a businessman, Ian is also scholar. He sits on the Board of the School of Business at California Lutheran University and at one time was even an Adjunct Professor. Ian has also written multiple articles for the Huffington Post covering various business-related topics. It’s clear that Ian has had many successes in education and business, including being the recipient of LA Journal’s “Best Workplace Award”. Major Awards include: Inc.5000 America’s Fastest Growing Private Companies - Hangar202 - 2016, Inc.5000 America’s Fastest Growing Private Companies – Syncromatics - 2015, Top 25 Alumni Award, California Lutheran University - 2011, USG Administrator of the Year, USC - 2008, Innovation in Transportation, City of Los Angeles, AQMD - 2007, Service Gold Award, DHL - 2003, Silver APEX award, Airborne Express - 2002, and Navy Achievement Award, USMC - 1999... yet perhaps his greatest success lies outside of these realms.

Within his community, Ian has made sure to give back and has played an active role in addressing the homeless situation in downtown Los Angeles. He has worked to provide solutions to this problem that he feels he can help and has actively volunteered by giving back in various ways. Having not forgotten his military background, he also volunteers for and donates to the Semper Fi Fund for injured Marines and also coaches youth sports. However, perhaps his greatest accomplishment lies within his family. Ian is a proud father to his four children – Jarred, Makenna, Kade, and Alexandra – and a loving husband to his wife, Natalia. They share their home with their dog, Torque, and reside in Orange County, California.

There is no loss of words that people have used to describe Ian, amongst them father, husband, volunteer, entrepreneur, scholar, and marine. Citing his integrity, and intelligence, Ian has also been called “one of the good guys.” Indeed, Ian is “one of the good guys” – in business and beyond... and that perhaps is the simplest answer to the question “Who is Ian Sephton?”
